History of Mohra Moradu Buddhist Stupa

The ruins at Taxila, composed of a main stupa, a votive stupa and a monastery, have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1980.

Under the guidance of Sir John Marshall, Abdul Qadir conducted excavations of the Mohra Muradu ruins in 1914-1915. These ruins include a Buddhist monastery and two stupas. The largest of the two stupas is constructed on a base more than 4.75 meters in height, with a smaller, votive stupa located behind it.

Building Structure

The monastery is comprised of 27 chambers, which were built around a courtyard with a pool. Said pool was square in shape and was approximately half a meter deep, boasting steps along all its sides. In addition, the monastery contained a kitchen and a well that still serves its purpose today. The rain water was channeled into the pool from the roof of the monastery, connected via wooden extensions. Buddha statues are plentiful in the monastery courtyard and student rooms. Additionally, an assembly hall is situated in a corner of the monastery.

The monastery was a two-story building, with a staircase leading to the upper floor that passed through one of the rooms. Additionally, there were wooden structures connecting the courtyard, giving rise to the speculation that there may have been a third story due to the strength of the walls.
